About Us
The Sir Martin Wood Science Prize for Japan is awarded annually by the Millennium Science Forum to a young researcher from a Japanese University or research institute who has performed outstanding research in the area of condensed matter science.
The Millennium Science Forum was established in 1998 to promote scientific exchange between Britain and Japan.
The prize is named after Sir Martin Wood, Founder and Honorary President of Oxford Instruments plc. The Sir Martin Wood Prize winner receives ¥500,000 in cash and the opportunity to give a series of lectures in British Universities, including Oxford University. The lectures have acquired a good reputation in British Universities and contribute to the science and technology exchange between Japan and the UK.
Dr Keiichi Inoue, Associate Professor from the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Tokyo, Japan is the winner of the 2019 Sir Martin Wood Prize.
Dr Keiichi Inoue has been awarded for his work on Discovery of novel functional retinal proteins with new type of ion pumps based on comprehensive use of genetic analysis together with ion transport and spectroscopic measurements, opening a way to the use of proteins as functional materials.
Dr Inoue received the prize at the Millennium Science Forum on 22nd November 2019 at the UK Embassy in Tokyo.

To commemorate the 20th Sir Martin Wood Prize for Japan this year, a booklet has just been published by the Millennium Science Forum (MSF) that includes abstracts from all the prize winners since 1999. The winners also shared their comments on how winning the prize helped their career and their current research.
