Custom and Speciality Systems

Our established depth of technical expertise and hands-on engineering experience in the design and manufacture of superconducting magnets and cryogenic systems, enables us to create tailored solutions for customers’ specific application and experimental needs.

Our world-leading capabilities are successfully applied in custom-engineered special systems including the following applications: 

Beamline sample environments for neutron scattering, X-ray scattering, and muon spin resonance

  • Advanced coil geometry, split-pair superconducting magnet systems with helium-recondensing, Cryofree®, or conventionally helium-cooled cryostats
  • Active shielding available on high field, wide angle split pair systems to reduce magnetic footprint
  • Asymmetric and dual mode (selectable symmetric/asymmetric) magnet design for inclusion of polarised neutron experiments
  • Integrated variable temperature insert (VTI), 3He refrigerator, or dilution refrigerator
  • VTI systems can be extended to lower temperatures by a 'secondary insert' HelioxVT 3He refrigerator or KelvinoxJT dilution refrigerator
  • VTI systems can have extended upper temperatures to 800 Kelvin

“Outsert” magnets for ultra-high field 

High field and wide magnet bore combinations (with high stored energy up to several MJ), for superconducting magnets utilising high temperature superconductor (HTS) insert coils, for example:

  • 15 Tesla, 250 mm magnet bore
  • 19 Tesla, 150 mm magnet bore

Synchrotron XMCD measurements

Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) magnet systems with:

  • Fast-ramping split-pair or dual-axis magnets
  • Field vector operation
  • Sample-in-UHV cold finger

Unique laboratory research systems

  • The highest field, commercially available, compact magnet systems up to 22 Tesla
  • Systems requiring large experimental space – for example, 18 T, 150 mm magnet bore to enable a rotatable SPM head
  • High field and large-bore 2 and 3-axis vector rotate magnets – for example, 12/3/1 T, 77 mm bore or 3-axis optical access 3/3/3 T

Dark matter research

High field and wide magnet bore combinations, as driven by the experimental strategy, where the field volume product (B2V) is a key driver of detector cavity Q factor.

Combine with high-cooling-power dilution refrigerator (up to 1000 µW at 100 mK) – conventional helium-cooled or Cryofree®

microKelvin demagnetisation platforms

Double-magnet and dilution refrigerator systems:

  • Demagnetisation and sample magnet combinations to suit the customer’s demag stages
  • Low-field cancellation regions to allow location of heat switches and thermometry

Solid-state NMR, EPR, ESR, and related applications

Magnet systems with:

  • High homogeneity
  • High persistence (low drift rate)
  • Additional sweep coils
  • Active shielding
  • Room temperature bore or integrated VTI

Ion traps and sources

Magnet systems with typically with an ambient temperature, horizontal bore, and combinations of:

  • High homogeneity in specific volume and/or specific axial/radial field profile
  • High persistence (low drift rate)
  • Fast ramping
  • Active shielding
